Some actions leave a structure that can keep working after the action ends.

What It Is

A person with an income can respond to a savings goal by spending less, transferring money or canceling a subscription. A person who wants to earn money but has no product, leads or delivery process has no equivalent action available. The goal identifies a gap in both cases, but only the first has a mechanism ready to close it.

Invokable structures are things outside the person that already exist and can be called on when a goal requires them: companies, agent bodies, institutions, programs, saved workflows and skills. They turn an intention into available actions. Without them, a goal can keep producing an error signal that nothing answers.

"I want to find invokable structures that create a larger decision space. This could be companies, it could be agent-led companies."

This locates much of agency in the structures an actor can create or borrow. Drive, personal capability and willingness are not the whole account. A goal needs an action vocabulary, and external structures supply it.

The Goal-Validity Test

A control system requires a goal state, sensors, actuators, a control loop and resource constraints. Setting a goal supplies one of those five components. Its error signal measures the distance between the current state and the declared target, but that measurement is useful only when a mechanism can respond.

"A goal is like you generate an error signal. But if I don't have a mechanism to respond to that error signal, or the error signal is too noisy — nothing to do… If I set a goal like I want to make fifty k this month, I don't have the actions. So I need to build that action vocabulary."

“Save $50k” is a valid goal for someone with an income and spending they can change. “Make $50k this month” is invalid for someone with no product, leads or delivery pipeline. This is the same incompleteness as a thermostat without a furnace: the target can be set and the gap measured, but nothing heats the room. An unanswerable error signal dissipates as anxiety, which is roughly how that missing response feels from inside.

The stalled goal invites judgments about hunger or discipline. A completeness check instead asks which component is absent. It is almost always the actuator. The first action is therefore to build or borrow something capable of responding, rather than to apply more effort to a goal with no available action.

Goals Compile to Configurations

Once enough structures exist, a new goal can be expressed through their existing capabilities:

"The key thing is they are expressive enough that I could set a new goal and it becomes a configuration on these invokable structures."

“$100k by end of month” becomes a question about which ventures to run, how intensely, selling what and to whose leads. Those choices configure machinery that already works. The obstacle was the absence of programmable income structures, not effort; the work is searching their possible configurations rather than forcing more willpower into each day.

Macrostate Engineering declares what must be true and leaves a computation to resolve the details. At the scale of a life, these standing structures are that computation. Declaring a target without them supplies an acceptance criterion but leaves the search space empty.

Causality Programming makes desired behavior the default path at the habit level, such as arranging for the gym to happen without a daily decision. A company does similar work at a larger scale. It establishes a path from “someone needs X” to “money arrives” without requiring the path to be derived again for every customer.

"It is modifying material reality so responsibility and computation move into the environment—rearranging causality so the world itself helps produce the desired consequence."

The environment now carries part of the responsibility and computation required to produce the consequence.

Borrowing Before Building

Firms, institutions, cohorts, accelerators, fellowships and government pipelines already offer capabilities. A new structure is unnecessary when an existing one can be invoked:

"If intelligence means getting what you want, it means being able to use the structures present in your environment… It's the definition of stigmergy."

Stigmergy describes coordination through structures left in the environment. A spider's web gives the working image: the animal creates a structure that continues doing work for it. A city, an industry or a stage of life offers a different collection of such possibilities. Enumerating that collection, as one would inspect the functions in an imported software library, reveals choices that equal talent alone would not make available.

Institutions can also provide the conditions behind an apparent virtue. Universities surround multi-year learning with social pressure, prestige and access, making patience rewarding:

"It takes a lot of patience, and patience is not just a virtue. It is a system — when you have other things that make it rewarding."

If a plan requires patience that the person does not reliably sustain, the missing element can be a system that rewards the corresponding behavior. Moralizing vs Mechanistic applies this translation to discipline and willpower; here the supporting structure is outside the person.

Spinnerets

Some actions produce a result that is consumed. Others leave a capability that can be used again:

"Agency can be created like a spider defines its area of control with a web. What are your spinnerets—the actions that expand your area of influence?"

Incorporating a venture, publishing a system others can invoke, building an agent body that continues running and joining an institution with standing capabilities are spinneret actions. For the same effort, a spinneret action leaves behind something callable, permanently expanding the decision space. An ordinary action ends with its immediate result.

The Ladder of Agency describes increasing control through demonstrated mastery. From Level 4 upward, the physical work of climbing is creating or commanding larger invokable structures: forcing functions, coordinated teams and institutions. Each level makes another class of structure available.

Marshalling, Not the Clever Push

A single clever intervention can improve an outcome, but structures also need ongoing coordination:

"I used to think working smart was a one-time thing — find a clever high-leverage solution. ... But I realized it is not just a one-time push but also leveraging pre-existing structures, or marshalling, or compounding them."

Marshalling means keeping the inventory current, routing new goals through it and combining capabilities so that later goals have more options. When the structures search and eliminate unsuitable configurations, the work can feel light because they are carrying the computation.

Effort spent building a structure persists outside the person. Effort spent pushing directly at a goal is internal and disappears with the day. The Agent Body uses the same containment principle: personal willpower varies, so a surrounding structure retains the work that is meant to compound.

Advice Becomes Tooling

Working backward, SMART goals and the Eisenhower matrix are operations on a representation of goals. When that representation lives only in someone's head, each operation has to be remembered and performed manually. Making the representation external changes what can execute it:

"The meta-heuristics we teach as human advice… were always operations on goal-space that you had to run by hand… Advice becomes tooling."

An indexed graph of pursuits and experiments gives an agent something to operate on. The heuristic can then become a callable skill applied to that graph. Knowledge that formerly cost memory every time it had to be used becomes a structure that can be invoked. The same capability-building process now applies to cognition itself.

Boundary: Structure over Request

Structure over Request and invokable structures solve different failures. The former concerns quality: depth, rigor and voice depend on the topology of the computation producing them. An invocation graph is built so that the work has those properties.

Invokable structures concern capability: whether there is an action available to pursue the goal at all. A company, an agent body or a pipeline supplies that action. An invoked structure can contain a carefully designed computation graph, so the two approaches compose, but improving output quality cannot replace a missing actuator.

The distinction also helps diagnose unclear work. Legibility concerns whether actions and state are readable enough to use. An invalid goal feels foggy because it produces no legible action. If the fog comes from undefined variables in the plan, Clarity provides the diagnosis. If the plan is already clear and nothing can be called on to perform it, further planning will not create the missing structure.
